This is the regen. DEF = Diesel Exhaust Fluid, used to reduce nitrogen oxide compounds (NOx) in the exhaust. DPF = Diesel Particulate Filter, captures the “soot” that diesels are known for. Based upon what I'm seeing in the owner's manual, it appears we will have better information during regens. Up to now, we'd get a brief 2 second orange screen (Cleaning Exhaust Filter) and after that, we'd never know when it was done; nor would we know when it would start.
the DPF is suitable for continued service. Often, an in-chassis regen is all that is required. Very oily DPFs can be baked in FSX's TrapBurner under Program #2 or #3 (24+ hours of baking). Q. Should I replace a DPF if it gets contaminated with coolant from an EGR cooler failure?
How often depends, but on average I get one every 500-600 miles with mostly motorway miles. You don't get a light when it happens as it just occurs in the background. The light will only come on when the car MUST do a regen (due to failed/interrupted regens), when this happens you must drive the car at reasonable speed till the light goes off
